Low-Emission Zones & Environmental Stickers in Valencia and Spain
If you plan to drive in the low-emission zones (Zona de Bajas Emisiones, ZBE) of major Spanish cities such as Valencia, Barcelona, Seville, Málaga, Córdoba, and Madrid, you’ll need an environmental sticker (Distintivo Ambiental). This regulation also applies to vehicles with non-Spanish license plates.
Foreign vehicles cannot purchase the Spanish environmental sticker, but Danish, German, French, and Austrian stickers are also valid in Spain.
If you don’t already have an environmental sticker, it’s best to apply for the French Crit’Air vignette at least two weeks before departure—especially convenient if you’ll be driving through France to reach Spain. You can request it here and find useful ordering tips here.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Driving in a low-emission zone without a valid environmental sticker can result in a fine of at least €200. While Valencia police may stop vehicles for violations, they will not issue fines until December 31, 2025.
Spanish Low-Emission Zones
Under the Climate Change and Energy Transition Law, 149 Spanish municipalities are required to implement low-emission zones to improve air quality. Before traveling, check official sources to locate restricted areas:
